The notorious Chesapeake Bay pirate, Captain Billy Baye, has recently been sighted in Annapolis Harbor and Back Creek. Some sightings have placed him onboard the tour boat Harbor Queen and others onboard Rebecca and many sightings report him in the company of a giggling band of children wearing eye patches or pirate hats.

Watermark Cruises, Inc. is introducing two new public tours featuring the fictitious pirate Captain Billy Baye. Pirates of the Chesapeake is geared to children ages 6 to 12 but is sure to amuse and delight all ages. For adults looking for a swashbuckling good time, Watermark is also launching a three-hour Pirate's Rum Tasting & Reggae cruise featuring Orlando Phillips, Captain Billy Baye and Lady Anne Arundel.

Captain Billy Baye is portrayed by Cliff Long. An anthropologist, historical interpreter, and musician, Mr. Long presents the character of Captain Baye in "first person" and in full 18th century garb. Musical instruments used during his performances correspond with instruments known during the colonial period. Mr. Long has provided engaging and entertaining historically based programming for almost twenty years and specializes in first person character interpretations.

During the one-hour Pirates of the Chesapeake tour, Captain Billy Baye, a.k.a. Cliff Long, and his sidekick Grumpy Stumpy the Pirate Crab, a cleverly fashioned hand puppet, keep children totally entranced with stories, games and songs about real and imaginary pirates and treasure of yore. The new tour is a spin off of Watermark's Pirate Cruise, which they have offered as a school field trip since 1999.

The Caribbean meets the Chesapeake on the Pirate's Rum Tasting & Reggae cruise featuring Orlando Phillips, Captain Billy Baye and Lady Anne Arundel. Orlando, a multi-talented solo musician performing Calypso, Soca and Reggae, will keep the evening lively with steel drum, saxophone, keyboard and unique vocal performances. Captain Baye will serve as the evening's emcee and entertain guests with the intriguing and often humorous lore behind the sampled rums. Lady Anne Arundel will be onboard with her escort Capt. Baye.

"Adding a live performance by a historical interpreter has given depth and quality to our pirate cruises," states Debbie Gosselin, president of Watermark Cruises. "Through his use of humor Cliff Long easily relates to all ages and all types of people. He is a real entertainer."

Watermark's school field trip Pirates Cruise went through a metamorphosis this season with the colorful addition of Capt. Billy Baye. Decked out in full pirate attire, Captain Baye conducts both the onshore and boat portion of this two-hour program, which has been renamed Capt. Billy Baye's Treasure Hunt. Basic topics covered during this fun and educational field trip are famous literary pirates and privateers, food and provisions, and navigation, history of the Jolly Roger, and Chesapeake pirates and privateers. The program can be adapted for grades K-7.

Capt. Billy's Baye's Treasure Hunt is also available as a pirate theme birthday party. The cost for the two-hour party is $875 for up to 35 people and $10 for each additional person. The price includes Captain Billy Baye, one-hour cruise on Rebecca, one-hour onshore at the Annapolis Landing Marina pavilion, birthday cake, plates, napkins, juice box and a souvenir (eye patch or pirate hat) for each child.

The Pirates of the Chesapeake public tour will run from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. during the Labor Day holiday, Thursday, August 28 through Monday, September 1 of 2003. The tour boards at 10:30 a.m. at Annapolis City Dock. Tickets are $8 for children 11 and under and $13 for adults and include a souvenir such as an eye patch or pirate hat for each child.
