Watermark Welcomes Afghan Students to Annapolis

(Annapolis, MD) -- Watermark, the premier tour, charter and cruise company of Annapolis, MD was pleased to welcome the twelve winners of the Sports United Program to Annapolis on Thursday, November 12, 2009.

The Sports United Program, which is sponsored by the Educational & Cultural Affairs division of the US State Department, teamed up with the US Basketball Federation to bring the twelve young Afghan women to the United States.  The girls were selected from fifty originally nominated by the Basketball Federation based on exemplary team leadership, love of the game, a strong academic record and, most importantly, willingness to learn.

The ultimate goal of the 10-day program was to empower the girls, ranging in ages from fourteen to sixteen and foster their love of learning and basketball.  They visited local high schools, Montrose Christian School and Severn School, where they practiced with their basketball teams and participated in a meet & greet with St. Mary’s.

While in Annapolis, the girls enjoyed the history, culture and fun of the area as presented by Annapolis Tours, Watermark’s land-based operation, during an informative and entertaining tour of the lives of prominent Colonial Women of Maryland.  Watermark guide Allison Eckstrom led the girls on the tour and said, “In spite of a significant language barrier, the girls clearly enjoyed viewing Annapolis historic sites including the Sands House, the Paca House and the State House.  They appreciated Maryland's Colonial history and delighted in Colonial dress and customs, particularly the universal language of ladies, flirting with a fan.”

After their time in Maryland the girls continued their journey to New York where they were privileged to meet the VP of International Operations at the NBA, which donated resources to women in Afghanistan, as well as some of the basketball players.

Annapolis Tours, by Watermark, was pleased to showcase Annapolis and its history to illustrate women’s leadership roles to the visiting Afghan young women.  “Our knowledgeable and highly-trained guides bring our history to life,” said President Debbie Gosselin.  “Annapolis attracts people from all over the globe, and we love our role of sharing and interpreting our City.”
