African American Heritage Award at the Anne Arundel County Regional History Day Award Ceremony presented by Annapolis Tours® by Watermark®
(Annapolis, MD) – The first African American Heritage Award from Annapolis Tours by Watermark was awarded in conjunction with Maryland History Day to Ariah Alba, a student at Lindale Middle in Linthicum Heights, Maryland for her individual exhibit on Rosa Parks. The award was presented to Ariah for having the outstanding student project dedicated to the rich and authentic journey and heritage of African Americans. Squire Richard Hillman, a Guide with Annapolis Tours and a former Mayor of Annapolis, presented the award to Ariah at the Anne Arundel County Regional History Day Award Ceremony at Arundel High School on April 11th. Ariah was also awarded with four tickets to Annapolis Tours by Watermark’s African American Heritage Tour and a Harbor Queen cruise for four.
Annapolis Tours by Watermark has been offering the African American Heritage Tour in Annapolis for several years. The 2-hour walking tour was developed in partnership with the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation and the Foundation receives a portion of the proceeds of every tour. The African American Heritage Tour is now offered on the third Saturday of each month through October. The tour departs at 1:00 p.m. from the Information Booth at Annapolis City Dock.
Maryland History Day is a year-long educational program sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council to encourage students to explore local, state, national and world history. After selecting a historical topic that relates to an annual theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums and oral history interviews. They analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topics’ significance in history and create final projects that present their work. These projects can be entered into a series of competitions, from the local to national level, where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators. Congratulations Ariah!
